Friday, November 30th, the Men’s Activism (MA) volunteer group hosted their second annual Beard Championships. Over 270 men on campus pledged to participate in the MA’s No Shave November for Consent, during which the men vowed to grow beards to raise awareness about the need for consent prior to sexual activity.
Beardsmen received a t-shirt and pin and were asked to sport them throughout the month of November. When asked about their beards or why they weren’t shaving, beardsmen would respond that they were choosing to not shave their facial hair as a reminder of the need for explicit verbal consent prior to engaging in sexual activity. The beard served as a catalyst to start a conversation about sexual consent and rape culture among men on campus.
The Beard Championships took place in the University Club of the Michigan Union. Amid desserts provided by PULSE and two performances from a bearded Men’s Glee Club, attendees viewed video submissions from beardsmen which detailed their NoShember experiences in relation to consensual sex. After the six video submissions were viewed, the audience cast their ballot for the title of Michigan’s Best Beard. The title of Michigan’s Best Beard and a Kindle Fire went to Oriol Burgos-Tsoffar, a sophomore in the college of Literature, Science and the Arts.
Please enjoy these video submissions from Oriol and finalists Avery Robinson, and Sakib Elahi, as well as Men's Activism Volunteer Ajay Shenoy. Congratulations to Oriol and a sincere thank you to all those who participated and supported the Men’s Activism No Shave November for Consent!
