Sexism in Advertising Campaign

Sexism in Advertising Campaign

Every day, every one of us is bombarded by media images that make girls and women into dolls, toys, trash, and props.  Women of color are sometimes portrayed as exotic and animalistic.  Staging rape, stalking, and murder scenes are apparently acceptable ways to sell handbags.  On top of that, everything is permeated by sex, sex, sex.  Ever get fed up?  We do, too.

Men's Activism Volunteer Program

The Men’s Activism Program is the newest of the three volunteer programs at SAPAC.  The group is open to all students, regardless of gender, and is focused on educating men on issues surrounding sexual and relationship violence.  The Men’s Activism Program hopes to show men throughout the university that they play an essential role in ending sexual assault.  They do so through various innovative means designed to reach a population that is often unaware of the role they could play in fighting against these issues.  Some of the events that the MA program is involved in are the

Recidivism

Striving for Justice: A Toolkit for Judicial Resolution Officers

Webster’s Dictionary defines recidivism as, “The tendency to relapse into a previous undesirable type of behavior, especially a crime.” One factor that is crucial to consider when making sanctioning decisions is the likelihood that the person will repeat the violation.  This section is designed to inform panelists about recidivism and how to assess recidivism likelihood.  In addition, this section addresses requirements within Title IX legislation.

David Lisak Discusses Sexual Violence at Annual Tamara Williams Memorial Lecture

On Wednesday, March 7, 2012 David Lisak, Ph.D., was the keynote speaker at the annual Tamara Williams Memorial Lecture. This lecture serves to memorialize Tamara Williams, a University of Michigan student and Family Housing resident who was killed by her boyfriend in 1997. In addition to remembering Tamara's legacy, this lecture raises awareness of the realities of sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Before Dr. Lisak spoke, Robin Wilson, associate professor of Dance at the University of Michigan, shared a dance titled "Shattered Globes" that she choreographed in honor of Tamara.

Reporting a Sexual Assault to Police

SAPAC supports a survivor’s right to choose whether to report a sexual assault. However, a prompt report may strengthen the case for prosecution. With that said, it is never too late to make a report or seek help from other agencies. Learn more about reporting a sexual assault here.
