Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center

Man singing or shouting in a speaker - raising our voices

Tuesday October 25th 6pm-midnight in the Michigan League and Mendelssohn Theatre

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC) at the University of Michigan was founded in February of 1986 by a group of committed students who raised their voices to bring greater attention to the issue of sexual violence on our campus. This year, SAPAC celebrates 25 years of teaching, leading, and healing.

RA!S!NG OUR VO!CES: SAPAC’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Concert, pays tribute to the thousands of University of Michigan students who have raised their voices to help end sexual violence in our community and to promote and support a respectful, nonviolent community.

The event will begin with interactive activities in the Vandenberg, Hussey, and Concourse rooms on the second floor of the League. These rooms will contain our Coffee House space, featuring UM musical and spoken word performers (refreshments included), an Art Happening Space with creative activities (collaboration with FOKUS), and a Resource Fair/Connection Zone where you can participate in discussion with organizations on campus, such as The F-Word, Body Peace-Corps, DoRAK, Students Empowering Students, Spectrum Center, WIC, Sexperteam, PULSE, Students For Choice, Take Back the Night/University Students Against Rape, and SAPAC.

Join us for a celebratory concert with performers Hana Malhas, Izzrael, and ending in a dance party with our headlining act Ella Riot in the Mendelssohn Theater!

Hana Malhas is a University of Michigan graduate and currently working on her MBA at the Ross School of Business. Originally from Amman, Jordan, she is an Ann Arbor based artist and blends styles from both worlds to create her own genre of music. Her music can best be described as folk, but she also performs in Arabic. Hana has performed across the Midwest and Middle East and released her debut album, “Shapeshift” in March 2010.

Reigning from Cleveland, OH, Izzrael’s hip-hop career began at the age of 12 when he first started rapping. His lyrics are unique and reflect his passion for poetry, writing, and politics. Izzrael continues to gain notice throughout the entire Midwest with his social justice influence.

Ella Riot’s fusion of pop, funk, rock, and techno has resulted in a well-deserved growing popularity around the country. The group originated in Ann Arbor with University of Michigan roots. Ella Riot was named one of the most promising bands in the nation by the American Eagle New Music Union in 2008. Their high energy and upbeat music has been hard to describe and the band has invented the term “DanceThink Music” to best illustrate its own genre of music.
